THE ROLE OF WHEEL ALIGNMENTS

Heading out on your first few shake-down trips in your camper, hybrid or off-road caravan is always exciting. Testing the features and systems, experimenting with different ways to pack your caravan and increasing the load are all part of the adventure. During all this, one aspect that is often overlooked is wheel alignment. Properly aligned wheels not only improve safety and handling, but also extend the life of your tyres and suspension components. At SWAG, we suggest getting a comprehensive wheel alignment after towing your loaded caravan for the first 500 kilometres. This alignment will account for the settling and shifting of components during the shake-down period, ensuring your camper, hybrid or off-road caravan tracks straight and handles predictably.

Here’s a few reasons why we suggest getting a comprehensive wheel alignment after traveling 500km with a loaded caravan.

01

SETTLING AND SHIFTING COMPONENTS

After the initial break-in period of around 500km with a loaded caravan, the suspension components, axles, and other parts can settle and shift slightly from their initial factory setting. Remember, everyone loads their caravan differently. A wheel alignment at this point ensures the wheels are properly aligned after this initial settling period.
02

PREVENT PREMATURE TYRE WEAR

Misaligned wheels cause uneven tyre wear, which reduces tread life. An alignment maximizes even tyre wear for longer tyre life.
03

OPTIMAL TRACKING AND HANDLING

Proper wheel alignment ensures the caravan tracks straight and handles predictably, improving safety and driving dynamics.
04

IDENTIFY ANY POTENTIAL ISSUES

The 500km alignment allows your technician to inspect the suspension, axles, and wheels for any potential problems that may have developed during the initial shake-down period.
05

REGULAR ALIGNMENTS

The 500km mark is a reasonable interval to true up the alignment after the initial settling period while still being early enough to prevent excessive tyre wear or handling issues from developing. Regular alignments (such as annually) are also suggested to ensure proper tyre wear, handling, and safety.

Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

Imitation is often regarded as the sincerest form of flattery, as the adage goes. Regrettably however, it’s frequently used for the wrong reasons. At SWAG, we subscribe to a different expression; success is not given, it’s earned through hard work and determination.

And while many brands may look the same on the surface, it’s the customer experience that’s key. Rather than solely relying the manufacturer’s word for their product, we encourage you to seek out unbiased feedback by speaking with the caravan community. Consider established brands, with a strong history and large community groups on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Join these groups, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

We began our journey in 2008. We have established long standing partnerships both here in Australia and abroad. We have invested countless hours on video calls, on planes and sitting in airport lounges and lobbies. We have invested significantly in our designs, development, prototyping, education and retention. We take pride in our SWAG community, knowing they are more than happy to share their experiences with anyone looking to buy.

Much like the Australian automotive industry, there are numerous manufacturers to choose from. Just as you would when buying a new car, it’s important to opt for an established and reputable brand like SWAG when purchasing a caravan.

Buying a caravan is a significant investment so take your time, do your research and feel free to ask us any questions you may have.
